Young promising people with big visions: The winners of Student Camp 2024!
22. August 2024 · Ukategorisert
This year’s Student Camp at Nor-Fishing has once again been a melting pot of innovation and collaboration between committed students. Over two days, they have worked together to find solutions to the industry’s most pressing challenges.
The winning group distinguished themselves with their project, which seamlessly combined digitalization, sustainability and interdisciplinary work.
This is the winning group:
Sigurd Nash Reksen, bachelor’s student in biology at NTNU
Hanna Sannes, master’s student in biology at UiB
Fahim Anwar, PhD student in international business at NTNU
From tradition to innovation: A digital future
The winning group has worked on the problem of how digitization can be used to promote sustainability in fisheries and aquaculture.
“After speaking to exhibitors at various stands, we gained insight into the challenges they face. We have a need for increased digitization in an industry that is still characterized by traditional methods,” says Sigurd.
The group used their time at the exhibition to survey the common challenges faced by both the fisheries and aquaculture industries and came up with a solution that can both improve data collection and future prediction of spawning areas.
“We found that there is very little good data on areas where fish spawn. By digitizing and modernizing this information, we can both improve current operations and predict environmental conditions ten to twenty years into the future,” explains Hanna.
The students’ solution will be able to help prevent misplaced sites that could stand in the way of the development of a healthy maritime environment.
An interdisciplinary collaboration
The group members, who did not know each other before arriving at Nor-Fishing, had to quickly find out how they could get the most out of the collaboration in a short time.
“We were divided into groups and started by mapping each other’s strengths. This helped us quickly understand how we could work together effectively,” says Fahim.
Hanna and Sigurd’s background in biology, combined with Fahim’s expertise in innovation and entrepreneurship, helped them develop a holistic solution that can be relevant to both fisheries and aquaculture.

An important meeting place
None of the group members have previously participated at Nor-Fishing, but they all agree that the arena is invaluable for students who want to make a difference in the industry.
“I didn’t quite know what I could contribute as a student before I came here, but here we have been given the opportunity to come up with ideas and be taken seriously by the industry,” says Sigurd.
“Encountering working life in this way has been incredibly useful. We have learned a lot from various companies, other student groups and gained a broader perspective on our opportunities in future working life,” says Fahim.
The experiences from Student Camp have also sown the seeds for future collaboration.
“We have already talked about going to other exhibitions together. I hope we can keep in touch, not only within our group, but also with the other participants at the camp,” concludes Hanna.
